mmmmmmeatball!

When I make a batch of my dad's super yummy meatballs, There is always too much, so we have some for supper and freeze the rest. Then, a week or two later, I am always disappointed when we run out of frozen ones.

(Yes, I know this is a meat wad, and not a ball)

This time I made a double batch -which makes sense anyway because the recipe calls for half a pound of hamburger and half a pound of sausage. We don't really eat sausage, so the other half pound just sits in my freezer until it get too old and I throw it out.

So now I'm looking forward to a meatball rich December.

Perfect Rice

I used to make rice about once a week, and I was pretty good at it. But since a long hiatus, I have had terrible luck with my old recipe (is water and rice a recipe?). I have been searching for a method that works. I think I have found it, and I don't want to forget it so here it is:

1 pot of rice

Ingredients

  • rice (about 3oz per person for plain rice)
  • water

Directions

  1. Wash your rice thoroughly in cold running water.

  2. Bring the saucepan part of a double boiler of salted water to the boil.

  3. Tip in your washed rice, stir briefly and bring back to the boil.

  4. Time for exactly 5 minutes.

  5. Turn the rice into the top of your double boiler (one with holes), place an inch of boiling water from the kettle in it (the bottom bit) and place the rice back over it.

  6. Cover and steam for a further 10 minutes.

  7. *note*this recipe is for"standard" long grain rice, different types of rice will need less cooking at this stage-jasmine and basmati in paricular take only about a further 7 minutes, whilst koshihikari for sushi seems to need a little longer.

Sunday sweets

I bought this because it looked so cool I had to see how it worked. We invited my mom, pop and bro over to share in the joy that is the Batter Blaster.

It worked well, especially when you put a few blueberries on the skillet first.
They tasted just like pancakes.

It made shapes really easily too.

It is terribly wasteful, but the label says it is organic, and the can is recyclable. Fun for one morning, or if you're going camping maybe. It was a great breakfast with my family.
