à la the Mad Hatter's tea party,
This is what I say when things get shifted because something new has moved in.
Most of the doors in the house had cheap glass knobs that get stripped pretty quickly, trapping people in a room when the knob comes off in their hand. (The reason you will find a large screwdriver in each of our bathrooms, you can stick it in the hole and turn the latch) It is my mission to eventually have all the doors appropriately knobbed with old ceramic handles. This isn't easy, as they seem to have risen in price. The local Re-Use center only sells them only with the latch mechanism lately.
Today I found a white ceramic doorknob for $1.70 at the thrift store today. The white ones make me think of a Doctor's office for some reason. All of the other ones we have are black, so this wouldn't really work for most of our doors. But the basement door is kind of set apart from all others in the house, and is in a white room, so it looks quite nice.

This allowed me to take the basement handle and move it to the powder room. That door has been a pain because it seems to be a bit thicker than the others, so the screw holes won't line up. The old basement door one has a cool pressure system where the screw puts pressure one 3 triangular shaped pieces so the it can go anywhere along the shaft of the door knobs. The powder room's glass knob ended up on the extra bedroom door, which has been knobless since the bathroom door got stripped out.

Once again I am impressed with your skills. Really like the reuse concept you have going. It only makes sense to me to use what you have and to spend little for what you need (thrift shops.) Job well done, Sarah.
ReplyDeleteI used to live in a duplex that had those handles. The one in the bathroom always came apart and we always got trapped in there. I used to leave a butter knife in case of emergency so it could be wedged in the door. Unfortunately my roommates kept removing the knife to the kitchen. Good times........
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the glass knobs, but had the same problem with them at the old house. Ah well. This house has much boring-er (!) knobs. Nice work. You have a very mechanical brain. I dig that!
