I spent my afternoon taming the raspberries. After a nice walk around a potential future neighborhood, we stopped for lunch and I got to work. This year I was merciless. I dug out the root balls of every bunch that was not nestled next to the garage. I tied those that were spared to my makeshift trellis on the garage. I'm hoping the leaves will turn to get some light so it won't look so bad.
I needed twine to tie up all the dead, so I went to home Depot. How much does twine cost? $50.
Yes, when you combine it with a real trellis, some weed blocker & 3 bags of manure.
After finishing the raspberries, I couldn't just stop, so I moved on the the backyard hostas.
Before with a huge crowd on the left:
I divided and divided and divided. It must have been 3 years ago that I put them in 'cause I stole them from my SIL's garden when they moved to the south side.

Now what to do with the extras? I've considered putting them in along my neighbors new fence since it creates 24 hour shade and is not too pretty along the bottom. In the process of deciding, I realized that the hostas by our front steps could stand to be split too. So I split them and put the extras on the other side of the steps.
They don't look great right now, but I'm planning to add edging and some mulch to help until they fill in.
The rest were placed under our southeast window, and I began the garden along he fence. The dirt there is beautifully black.
I also managed to get a lovely sunburn on my lower back and neck. ouch. I've been so careful this summer.

Wow! You must be exhausted, Sarah. Everything looks very nice.
